A Legacy Lives On: Honoring Dad’s Wisdom in Brandvlei
Life throws us curve balls when we least expect them, and sometimes, those curve balls hit harder than a fast pitch. On December 8, 2024, a day that was already poignant as my late Mom's birthday, my legendary Dad peacefully passed away in my youngest brother's and my arms. It was between 5:10 PM and 5:45 PM, quick and serene. He would have turned 81 in a month, and we believe his heart, though mighty, was simply too weak to carry on. We all knew this day would come, but you're never truly ready to say goodbye to the patriarch of your family.
Dad, the man who had played such a massive part in our lives, especially at Rusticana, had finally hauled in his sails for the last time. It was a huge shock, made even more so because we had plans. Big plans. He was supposed to travel with us to Brandvlei to help guide my son and I with a couple of significant home improvement projects: installing a new hot water cylinder (or geyser, as we call it here) and laying down a new municipal water supply line into the house. When Dad passed, our immediate priority shifted. We cancelled the trip to ensure he received the dignified send-off he deserved. Thank you, Dad, for everything.
Fast forward to April 17, 2025. Arriving in Brandvlei without Dad felt incredibly bitter-sweet, a mix of sadness and profound loss. Yet, there was also a powerful sense of unity. As a family, we stood together, and my son and I tackled those installations. With every wrench turn and pipe laid, we felt Dad's ever-present spirit, guiding us. It was as if he was right there, whispering instructions, just like he always did.
And you know what? We got it done. Just like you told us to, Dad. Rest in peace with Mom. Your wisdom, your guidance, and your incredible presence live on in everything we do.
